What Should I Eat If I Want To Eat Healthy Like My Great Grandmother?

Question:  I keep hearing that I should eat like my great or great-great grandmother.  What exactly does that mean?

Answer:  Isn’t it sad that we can’t even eat like our grandmothers used to eat?

You might wonder, why is that exactly?  Well, because if our grandmothers used to cook with “Crisco” and use “Margarine,” they were getting some of the horrific nutritional information we are getting today!

Your Great-Great Grandmother knew best! Do you know what means when it comes to your nutritional regimen?

Your Great-Great Grandmother knew best! Do you know what that means when it comes to your nutritional regimen?

The quality of food that came out of WWII was not of a high quality.  In matter of fact, not only was this the time in history that trans-fats were put in the limelight, but “artificial sweeteners” took center stage as well.

So, this is why we need to go back clear to the early 1900′s to find out what our healthy relatives used to eat.

The “diet” itself was pretty simple.

What did it primarily consist of you ask?

Basically…

UNPROCESSED REAL FOODS!

You know that this means that your Great-Great Grandmother wasn’t consuming these things:

  • Nothing from a BOX
  • Nothing from a BAG
  • Nothing from a CAN

It also meant that her nutritional regimen would have practically none of these things:

  • Artificial Additives
  • Preservatives
  • Pesticides
  • Processed Vegetable Oils

My question to you is this:  Are you eating foods from a box?  A bag?  A can?

And if so… why?

Does your diet consist of foods that consist of artificial additives?  Preservatives?  Pesticides? Processed Vegetable Oils?

Once again… why?

Your health relies primarily on your nutritional regimen.  What you do 80% of the time with your diet is going to dictate the future of your health!

The moral of the story?

Your GREAT-GREAT GRANDMOTHER knew best, eat predominately unprocessed real foods!

The poor health of the majority people residing in the United States is NO ACCIDENT.  For most of us, the quality of our health is in our very own hands!

What Are Some Health Misconceptions That Will Not Go Away?

Question:  What are some health misconceptions that “The Healthy Omnivore” is most alarmed about?

Answer:  Unfortunately, the list is long!

You can take look at a “favorite” post, with quite a list, here:  Eleven Health Misconceptions

For those people who are actually interested in attaining optimal health (you know, doing it the right way), and know that there is some work that needs to be done and it is going to take some time (non-infomercial/non-Big Pharma/etc.), my primary concern is the misconception that being fit is more valuable than being healthy or that being healthy and fit are the same thing.  Or, even worse, that damaging one’s health to become healthy is somehow worth it!

I cannot stress enough how wrong these two ideas are!

"Health" FIRST and then "FIT"! Please don't damage the first to achieve the second.

“Health” FIRST and then “FIT”! Please don’t damage the first to achieve the second.

Truth be known… most people greatly damage their health while trying to attain a high level of fitness.

How does this happen?  Simple.

By not eating, moving and living in a safe and efficient manner.

Eating, moving and living in an excessive/compulsive manner does NOT garner optimal health.

In the short term it is possible to attain a high level of fitness, but at what cost?

My recommendation is to ALWAYS attain optimal health first and then move on to attaining high level fitness goals.

Please, do NOT put the cart-before-the-horse!

If you are obsessive with the way you eat, or the way you move, or even the way you live for a good period of time you will most certainly damage your health.

And in some cases the damage may even be irreversible.

The pursuit of optimal health is a marathon and NOT a sprint!

When it comes to nutrition are you trying to win a sprint and get “instant” or even “immediate” results?  If so, there is a GREAT chance you are damaging your health!

When it comes to exercise have you given up on the “marathon” approach to “slowly” improving your health over time with a sprint-like approach that leaves you sore, aching, and damaged?

When it comes to your lifestyle do you deprioritize your sleep regimen because you “will sleep when I’m dead” and “sleep is for losers”?  This approach will certainly lead you on a path of degenerative disease and accelerated aging!

Some health misconceptions are worse than others, but putting being “fit” before being “healthy” is about as bad as it gets!

This world is “littered” with people who had a nano second of fame being fit and have struggle with their health the rest of their life.  Is it really worth it?

When It Comes To Weight Loss Is A Calorie A Calorie?

Question:  How can you say that a “calorie is not a calorie”?  Obviously they are, as you can see from people losing weight using the scale and skin caliper tests.

Answer:  Ugh!

Please, do NOT fall for the "hype" behind "a calorie is a calorie" when it comes to your weight loss! Your health could depend upon it!

Please, do NOT fall for the “hype” behind “a calorie is a calorie” when it comes to your weight loss! Your health could depend upon it!

Let me count the ways…

Boy, this health and fitness “misconception” of what we now are calling “conventional wisdom” will just not go away.

Disappointing, to say the least!

Let’s take a look at the issues with this question in general.

First of all, a scale will only tell you if you have lost weight.  It cannot tell you how much fat you have lost, let alone if some of your weight loss was muscle.

Secondly, skin calipers are great to help better inform you if your weight loss should be considered positively or negatively.  By this I mean, with a proper body-fat test you can better tell if you are losing fat or muscle, or gaining fat or muscle for that matter.  But remember, there is always a level of error with “any” body-fat test!

And to be perfectly honest, weight scales and skin calipers have nothing to do with all calories being equal!

Now, to the good stuff!

Is a “calorie a calorie”?

Absolutely NOT!!!

Here are just a few reasons that this “conventional wisdom” should ALWAYS be challenged.

But first, let me ask the question in a few different ways:

Do we really believe that consuming 2000 calories of sugar is the same as consuming 2000 calories of protein or fat?

When we eat a carbohydrate does it have the same effect on the body as when we eat a protein or fat?

How we combine our macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat) has nothing to do with how our body burns calories, it always comes down to calories consumed, correct?

If a calorie is a calorie then a diet that consists of 1500 calories of soda or ice cream or french fries or soda, ice cream and french fries will garner me the same weight loss results as that of 1500 calories of high quality organic foods, right?

Okay, you get my point, so let’s move on…

Why a Calorie is NOT a Calorie (Just a short list):

  • The human body processes the different macronutrients in completely different ways.
  • Protein requires more energy to be digested than carbohydrates.
  • Macronutrients that need more energy to be digested create a greater “thermic effect” and so they have less usable energy available.
  • Because of hormonal responses, carbohydrates can lead to fat storage.
  • Protein and Fat are better for satiation than Carbohydrates.
  • Moderate to High Glycemic Index Carbohydrates can actually promote hunger.

So, is a calorie a calorie?  No.

We need to be aware of the impact of each of the macronutrients individually, but just as importantly, how these foods are combined on a meal to meal basis.

Here is an excellent article that shows a study that says just that:  A CALORIE IS NOT A CALORIE

It is becoming clearer and clearer to me that the “FOOD” (including weight loss companies) and “SUPPLEMENT” industries are pushing this “calorie is a calorie” myth so that they can sell increasingly more of their product.

Can you believe that we actually have fallen for the “count calories” and “don’t worry about the quality because it is the quantity that counts” dogma that we see and hear so often today?

A calorie is NOT a calorie, so please, don’t fall for the hype and/or myth!
